The green industrial revolution to drive net zero
The Government’s bold strategy published on 18th November 2020 launched a ten-point plan as the race for net zero continues. Calling it our green industrial revolution – drawing parallels with the innovation demonstrated by industry leaders during the UK’s first industrial revolution some 250 years ago.
From advancing offshore wind, to exploring carbon capture and storage – the ambitious plan pledges £12 billion in Government investment to drive the race for net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
Providing up to 250,000 job opportunities by 2030
Realising this vision will also provide a wealth of opportunities for new jobs and skills. With around 90,000 job vacancies expected across the initial plans, rising to 250,000 by 2030.
- Offshore wind ambitions expected to support up to 60,000 jobs by 2030
- Small and Advanced Nuclear Reactors potentially providing 10,000 jobs during construction
- Developing low carbon hydrogen could support 8,000 jobs by 2030
- Decarbonising public transport could deliver 3,000 jobs by 2025
- Smarter, greener building developments creating 50,000 jobs by 2030
- Carbon capture clusters supporting 50,000 jobs by 2030 in Humber, Teesside, Merseyside, Grangemouth and Port Talbot
